For ages two estates of men have lived in Ukraine-Cossacks and buckwheat-planters. A Cossack, first of all, is a skilled warrior, inclined to military adventures, who wants to pull Turks or , let's assume, Tatars by the hair. And when it is being truce, he is always ready to be of service to French king, Polish Sejm or Russian czar. Owing to this Cossacks had friends and foes all over the world, but the foes outnumbered... It was a wonder that Cossacks were in strange, unusual relationships with their enemies. They managed to make profit of them no less than of their friends, calling their enemies tenderly "beloved foes". The tactics of waging war in steppes, the very shape of a sable and their own name "Cossack" our ancestors had borrowed from Turkic peoples. The word "Hauptman", hetman in our mother tongue was borrowed from German. The Cossacks regalia, regimental formation and judicial system were granted by the glorious Polish king Stephen Bathory and the French engineer Guillaume de Beauplan was teaching our Cossacks to master newest for those times European fortification.

In this way the legendary Cossack's might emerged, acquiring and learning all the best from over the world.

Though, Cossacks were not so lucky to be good soldiers permanently. They were also prominent hunters and fishermen, thanks Lord, there were plenty of game, fish to be found in the steppes, woods and rivers. And as one knows, salt is needed for meat and fish badly, so they traded and bought salt at Perekop. It happened to them to master commerce while going to western lands to sell game and wares.

And when a Cossack had got tired, he came to a hamlet and joined buckwheat-planters. Damn hot were young women in those small villages. Oh, those nightingales in June... What salo (bacon), honey, bread, vodka, borsch, potatoes and fragrant uzvar did those buckwheat-planters have! No wonder that many Cossacks stayed on this fertile soil becoming superb farmers, not worse than they had been warriors.

And breeding each other two these estates would grow up moulding Ukrainian nation.

One may assume that there is no similar nation in the world, where farmers and warriors were so intermingled. No, there is one another! Let's take America for example. They had their own Wild Field - they called it Wild West or in other words -Land West. The places there are fertile and deserted. After many centuries of hard peasants's labour a new nation has been born, which is entrepreneurial and wealthy.

Meanwhile, Ukraine went through countless ruins, the grief was dancing its waltz in our long-suffering land. How many hamlets, blossoms, people have perished, gone to eternity...

The time to rebuild all has come. And it is the time to gather all the best from all over the world as our ancestors used to do long, long ago.

To begin with, we ought to return to our soil. Especially, those who hired themselves out in remote and close lands, but, nonetheless, paid the education for their children without delay. And those young, educated, capable of using their knowledge and applying it to our fertile chernozyom (black earth). And skilled, wise old farmers who have survived not a single political power, who have seen a lot of bosses, but despite all have managed to increase their skills and experience and have preserved the public ownership from embezzlement. The time to ask our land forgiveness for all the years of outrage -the time to regain well-being and fertility of our soil has come. Not only in words, but in deeds should we repent and prove the justification of our intentions.

And we all should learn the way to respect our land from our forefathers. Cause this is our land. West Land.
